Just Sports Means Equity

Sydney Sweeney didn’t endorse Novig. She joined the cap table, and celebrity A&R grew up.

Flat endorsement is dead. Or at least it looks tired next to what landed this week.

Around 9 September (Complex exclusive that day, Hollywood Reporter and US Weekly the same), Sydney Sweeney’s “Just Sports” campaign for Novig went up. Nude, provocative, sports gear as the only clothes: footballs, basketballs, pads, the pool-table closer the lifestyle trades described. She is not talent-for-hire on this one. THR, Complex, LegalSportsBetting, and theigaming.eu all put it plainly: strategic partner and equity holder. Stake size undisclosed, cash vs. equity mix undisclosed. Fortinsky declined to give numbers. We will not invent any.

Complex’s interview is the part that matters for anyone who has ever watched a brand deal get phoned in. Sweeney helped shape the creative as an equity partner, and she worked on the campaign while filming Netflix’s Gundam in Australia. Her line to Complex: she had been part of the creative conversations from the beginning; she does not like to just put her face on something. That is the A&R sentence, whether she meant it that way or not. The face used to be the whole deal. Now the face wants a seat.

Jacob Fortinsky, Novig’s cofounder and CEO, told Front Office Sports (via LegalSportsBetting) that Sweeney approached Novig about an equity partnership. “We’re very excited to have her on the cap table.” He also credited her with helping craft the positioning line: “No wars. No death. No politics. Just sports.” US Weekly quotes campaign dialogue in the same key: no betting on wars, death, and no politics, just you, your takes, and sports. In the ad, per THR: “Think you know sports? Prove it. Novig is just sports. So they wanted to show just sports.” And the closer the trades loved: “You can’t trade this. I just look good here.” Her statement, via THR and US Weekly citing Variety, framed it as a fun idea: cut through the noise, focus entirely on sports, confidence, humor, a playful edge. Fortinsky’s THR statement: sports fans deserve a prediction market built specifically for them; Sydney helped bring that message to life in a way that’s impossible to ignore. Impossible to ignore is doing a lot of work. The nude did the rest.

Novig’s own lane, as THR paraphrased the company: sports-only prediction market / sports trading, 21+, nationwide launch under a federally regulated framework around August 2026 (“last month” relative to the 9 September coverage). Competitor context from theigaming.eu and LegalSportsBetting: Kalshi and Polymarket list non-sports contracts, politics included; Novig positions against that. Whether Novig “beats” anyone on volume or legality is not settled by a campaign. State vs. CFTC fights remain contested in the coverage. Night Shift is not a betting desk. We are interested in the deal shape.

The calendar gossip is almost too clean. LegalSportsBetting: LeBron teased Polymarket on X on 5 September (“Welcome to Polymarket HQ. Coming soon.”). Full commercial posted Tuesday, 8 September. Sweeney’s spot landed Wednesday, about a day later. First NBA player with an individual Polymarket partnership, per that outlet. Same NFL week, two different theories of celebrity. One is a superstar walking into a rival’s HQ energy. The other is an actress who joined the cap table and helped weaponize a sports-only pitch against the politics-and-war markets, wrapped in a viral nude built between Gundam takes. Background for the spreadsheet people: theigaming.eu notes Novig’s $75M Series B in February 2026 and more than $100M raised since 2021. Useful, not the point.

The point is how talent attaches now. Putting your face on a sportsbook used to be the whole transaction: day rate, usage, smile, done. Equity is the new A&R. You do not just clear a campaign. You help write the line. You sit on the table. You treat the brand like a release you have a publishing interest in, not a wardrobe call. Dance culture already knew versions of this: the label that is also the DJ’s company, the residency that is also the soft power, the software that ships under the artist name. Hollywood is catching the temperature.

No invented percentage, no claimed victory over Polymarket. Just the verified move: she approached, she shaped, she owns a piece we are not allowed to size. Just sports. Maximum noise. The endorsement died. The stake walked in wearing pads.
