Istanbul Pulled the Lights

They pulled Anyma’s ÆDEN date in Istanbul after a pile of posts decided the lights were satanic. That’s the headline. Underneath it is older, and I keep thinking about it on the walk home from smaller rooms than that: a city full of people who came to be changed, and a government that got scared of the pictures.

DJ Mag had it first for the English-language desk. The governor’s office revoked permission for the September 12 show at Ataköy Marina Arena after tour clips went around framed as ritual. Same room that cancelled God Is An Astronaut hours before doors this year. Same panic, different soundtrack. Tickets were still for sale while the official line was already no, a special kind of insult. You can still checkout for a night that has already been taken from you.

Anyma posted a few days later. The visuals are science-fiction, he said. Darkness into light. Five years of designers and animators pulling from art history. Not a religion, not a culture, and none of it AI. The part I can’t shake: he says the campaign ran his clips through AI until they looked like whatever the comment section needed them to be, then handed that version to the city. No warning. No meeting. Permit gone.

Rooms like ours have always had a problem with looking too much like themselves on camera. Now the camera can lie on purpose and a city will take the fake at face value. A light show that didn’t get to finish the story. I hate that for the people who already had the night circled.
