The Mouse Hired an Empire
deadmau5 leaves CAA for Independent Artist Group. The next flex isn’t a festival slot: it’s the software, the series, the IP stack.
Joel Zimmerman did not announce a single. He announced a wider desk.
Variety’s exclusive on 10 September: deadmau5 signed with Independent Artist Group for representation in all areas (music, film, television, digital content, gaming, technology, IP), previously CAA. Billboard fills the agency timeline: CAA from 2024; UTA from 2020 to 2024 before that. Manager Dean Wilson (Circuit Group / Seven20) and attorney Dina LaPolt stay. CelebrityAccess adds publicist Alexandra Greenberg at Falcon Publicity. The touring calendar is still a calendar. Billboard lists North American shows through the end of October, EDC Colombia in Medellín on 10 October, Red Rocks 30 to 31 October. That is not the story. The story is what he walked into the room carrying.
IAG’s Jim Osborne and Kyle Loftus, in a joint statement carried by Variety, Billboard, and CelebrityAccess, called him a once-in-a-generation creative force at the intersection of music, technology, content, and ownership. Music at the center, they said, “but the opportunity here goes well beyond music.” Zimmerman’s quote, same trades: he was attracted by IAG’s track record creating crossover content and ownership opportunities for musical artists. Partner with a team that understands the goals, and build what’s next. Ownership is the word that keeps showing up. File it.
The properties named for expansion are not abstract. Digital series Coffee Run (relaunch) with past guests CelebrityAccess lists as Pharrell, Skrillex, Tommy Lee, Zedd, Dillon Francis; Oberhasli Games; live-performance software Auto/Pilot: mixing, real-time arrangement, sampling, sequencing, automation. That last one is the tell if you have ever stood near a booth that was also a lab. Mau5trap’s roster history still hangs in the Variety piece like a receipt (Skrillex, Rezz, Noisia, Feed Me, i_o), proof he has been building rooms around other people’s names for a long time. Now the room is the product.
March 2025 is the other half of the posture. Create Music Group acquired the deadmau5 catalog and the mau5trap catalog (masters and publishing, more than 4,000 songs, plus a joint venture for future deadmau5 / mau5trap releases). Valuation language needs a careful ear. Variety’s 2026 IAG exclusive, and Music Week, THR, MBW on the 2025 deal, use “more than $55 million” or “over $55 million.” Create’s own news page says the deal is “valued at $55 million.” Both appear in reputable places. Night Shift will do what Variety’s exclusive does: more than $55 million, and leave the exact split alone. Nobody here has the earn-out spreadsheet.
Zimmerman on that Create deal, from Create’s announcement: he had worked with Jonathan, Alex, and Create for nearly two decades; with Create, he felt the music was going to reach more. Jonathan Strauss called it more than an acquisition: a responsibility. Fine. Responsibility is what you say when the catalog stops being a touring footnote and starts being a balance-sheet object. The IAG move is what you do after that object exists. You do not hire an all-areas agency to babysit a DJ set. You hire it to treat the set as the center of gravity for a stack: talk series, games, live software, whatever else fits under technology and IP without needing a festival poster to explain itself.
The old status symbol in this lane was the headline slot, main stage, closing set. The new one is quieter and more expensive: do you own the tool the room runs on, the series the chat watches between dates, the games company with your fingerprints on it, the catalog partnership that outlives the tour cycle. Zimmerman has been pointing at that intersection for years. IAG is the agency version of agreeing with him.
No greenlit film slate in the announcement, no commission terms, no public fight with CAA. The sources only state the prior representation and the move. Keep the invented drama out. What is on the page is enough. The mouse hired an empire. The festival still gets the mouse. The stack is the point.
