Working for the Knife
Mitski clocked in on Laurel Hell, the record you put on before you leave the apartment.
“Working for the Knife” is the fluorescent and the shift. Mitski’s Laurel Hell is out on Dead Oceans, the job that eats you and still wants a chorus, not a cottagecore escape. “The Only Heartbreaker” and “Love Me More” keep that same clock.
In Cumberland it’s the walk to the car in February, the heater that takes eight minutes, the feeling that you are both the knife and the thing it cuts: a sad song with a sequencer and a spine.
