Essential Listening: Untrue

Burial, rain on the glass, the club you could still hear from the kitchen.

March 2021 and the rooms are still a rumour: the kettle, the window doing that Pacific drip it does from October to June. You put on Untrue because a garage night would have been a crime and this record already knew the walk home. Burial, 2007. South London as weather. Not a sample pack. A city that keeps its lights on after the last bus.

The 2-step is in there if you grew up on it. So is the crackle that people keep calling “atmosphere” when they mean someone left the window open. Vocals that sound like they were found in a pocket, not booked. This is the other door besides the crate shop. Dummy gets the rain later in this paper. Untrue is the rain while the clubs are still illegal and the body still wants 138.

Leave it running. Don’t skip to the one you know from a “UK bass” playlist. If you start moving the room around (a light off, a coat on a chair, a second listen at 1am because the first one was too loud), that’s the listening. That’s the homework you actually want when the door still says closed.
