The Rooms Opened

Eighteen months of kitchen raves walked back into a real door.

July 19 and England called it Freedom Day. Nightclubs legal again, like legality was ever what made a room. Vancouver had been staggering toward the same sentence all summer: patio, then indoors, then a promoter text that said we’re doing it and nobody believed it until the wristband actually cut. Eighteen months of kitchen raves walked back into a real door. Nobody remembered how to queue, but everybody remembered the fit.

The first hour was ugly in the way reunions are ugly. People cried in the stall and called it allergies. The PA was too loud because we’d been living inside laptop speakers. Somebody wore the dress they bought in March 2020 and never got to use. Somebody else wore Hello Kitty pants and the room did not write a petition. The bathroom line was a census. You saw who made it. You didn’t ask about the ones who didn’t.

Promoters talked about capacity like it was a vibe. The group chat talked about the last song they played in the apartment when the apartment had to be enough. That song still won. The booth was a rumour that turned out to be a person. The afters started in the same kitchens. The difference was you had somewhere to be before.

If you were there, you kept the wristband. If you weren’t, don’t lie and say you were. The rooms opened. That was the whole story. Everything after is a club trying to charge you for a feeling you already paid for in 2020.
