The File Is the Record

Pressing plant is eighteen months out. Bandcamp Friday is not a vibe. It’s the object you can still hold.

The plant is eighteen months out and the night still needs a copy. Flip until something holds. In 2021 a lot of the holding is a wav. Vinyl plants stacked into next year. Cassette duplicators a rumour with a waitlist. Bandcamp Friday is not a lifestyle brand. It’s the one morning the platform stops taking a cut and the underground remembers it has a till. You buy the record that doesn’t exist yet. You live with the file. That’s not a compromise. That’s the copy.

Crate culture likes to pretend the object is the morality. Fine. Then the morality this year is: pay the person who made the thing, even if the 12-inch is a PDF of a tracking number. The boys who only count a night if they can grade the sleeve can sit this one out. The floor already knew a bedroom upload could move a room. PinkPantheress is about to prove it again. The file is not the enemy of the object. The checkout button that doesn’t go to the artist is.

If you wouldn’t keep it as a listener, it doesn’t ship. If you would, you buy it on the Friday and you don’t wait for the plant. Club Copy comes out of that habit. The crate was never supposed to be a personality. It was supposed to be a feeling you couldn’t shake on the walk home, even when the walk home was the hallway.
