The Cold Vein is the debut album by Cannibal Ox, Vast Aire and Vordul Mega, produced by El-P and released by Definitive Jux on 15 May 2001. It is the label’s first full-length. The path to it was already public. In late 2000 a split double vinyl put three new Company Flow songs beside Iron Galaxy and Straight Off the D.I.C., the two Cannibal Ox pieces that announced the temperature. Those two also appeared on Def Jux Presents, released 20 March 2001. Vein, a single, came in April 2001 with A B-Boy’s Alpha on the flip. The F-Word followed in September 2001. Oxtrumentals, the beats without the voices, came on 19 March 2002.

El-P, a year and a bit out of the Company Flow album that had made his name, builds tracks that do not behave like sample-loop beds waiting for a verse. They move. They scrape. They leave Vast Aire room to sound enormous and Vordul room to sound like a conspirator. Iron Galaxy is the mission statement: a New York that feels futuristic and broke at the same time. Raspberry Fields and The F-Word are the ones where the concept becomes songs you can actually learn. The album is long because the world they are describing is not a single. Harlem and the Def Jux office are the geography. The Cold Vein is the title that admits the mood.

Independent rap in 2001 had a lot of dusty loops and a lot of punchlines. This record is colder and more built. You can hear the Company Flow DNA and you can hear El-P getting out of that room by giving the beats to two other writers. Oxtrumentals is the proof the beats stand up alone. The album is the proof they were written for these voices. Def Jux’s first full-length did not sound like a label sampler. It sounded like a group.
