Mezzanine
Massive Attack’s 1998 record isn’t a Halloween costume or a trip-hop homework assignment. It’s the temperature of a kitchen that still wants weather at 4 a.m.

Halloween is a costume. Mezzanine is not. I put it on when the apartment needs to feel like a wet street without anyone having to go back outside: Bristol bass arriving like weather, a voice that sounds like it already left and then came back anyway because the night wasn’t finished arguing with itself. Massive Attack, 1998: the 4 a.m. record, not a mood board but a temperature you can stand in while the city does whatever cities do after last call.
The boys filed it under trip-hop and moved to the next assignment, which is fine; taxonomies are how some people survive beauty without having to feel it. I file it under the hour when the kitchen is still a club and nobody is brave enough for something cheerful. “Teardrop” is the famous one and it still works if you refuse to perform it, if you let it sit in the room instead of singing along like you’re auditioning for your own memory. The rest of the record is the point: the long dark, the cigarette you don’t smoke, the window cracked because the night is still in your hair and you need proof of air, the patience of a bassline that doesn’t care whether you dance.
I have walked home to this, wet collar, keys already cold in my hand. I have not walked home to this and put it on anyway, standing at the sink in last night’s jersey while the dishes made their small honest noise. Both counted. If Love Deluxe is the apartment with people still in it (warm, low, generous, the kind of listening that lets conversation survive), then Mezzanine is the apartment after they leave and you are not ready to be kind about the quiet. It doesn’t ask you to feel better. It asks you to stay with what you already feel until the feeling finishes its sentence, which is a rarer hospitality than most playlists offer.
Play it through. Don’t skip to the single like the album owes you a highlight reel. If you start the dishes while it’s on, that’s the listening. If you leave a coat on the chair and pretend someone might still come back for it, that’s the listening too. If you text nobody and let the room be enough, you’re finally doing it right. October 31 can keep the costume and the fake blood and the door that only opens for candy. Leave this on. The room will tell you when to take it off, and until then the bass can be the weather you were missing: Cascadia without the rain, Bristol without the ticket, a night that stays after the people go.
