To Hell With It

Eight tracks from a bedroom, and the floor already had the 2-step.

Eight tracks from a bedroom in 2021, some of them barely a minute, like the pirate station never went off air. PinkPantheress called the mixtape To Hell With It and put UK garage back in her throat without asking a label first. TikTok did the distribution and the floor did the rest. If you were twenty-four and you grew up on the 2-step your older cousin played in the kitchen, this was not a revival. This was a return.

The year still smelled like Zoom. Clubs were a rumour you were allowed to have again, then not, then maybe, so a bedroom was the only reliable room. That’s why the mixtape worked: no features, no outro, a vocal that sounded like it was texting you from the other bunk. The break on “Break It Off,” the hush on “Pain.” People called it lo-fi like that was an insult, but lo-fi was the point. The expensive mix was the lie we sat through for eighteen months.

Every A&R who slept on garage in 2014 woke up in October and pretended they had a playlist. They did not. The floor did, because they had the 138 in their body from the last time a kitchen was a club. They did not need a thinkpiece about Y2K. They needed eight tracks and a bus ride.

Keep the file. The industry will try to turn this into a season, and it isn’t. It’s someone in a room who remembered the drum pattern and didn’t wait for permission.
