You Bought a Place in Line

Berghain is selling tickets. DJ Mag dropped them to 21. The door can still send you home.

You can buy a ticket to Berghain now. DJ Mag just ranked them twenty-one. If you have ever stood in a line that was also a story you told yourself about who you are, you already know how this ends. I have. I have also gone home in the coat I wore for nothing. That’s its own education.

The ranking came out this week. Number one went to a new Ibiza hyperclub with one season behind it. Berghain, the room everyone talks about and almost nobody photographs, slid five places. It’s the only Berlin club still on the list. A poll like that measures reach: voting, capacity, marketing, the five-thousand-person room. Berghain doesn’t do any of that on purpose. Position 21 changes nothing about the queue on Rüdersdorfer Straße. The list is a brochure. The line is still the line.

The quieter story is the shop. Groove and Faze have been writing it up all year: an official ticket page for select nights in Säule and Panorama Bar, including the house-leaning Finest Friday series. Four tickets max. Klubnacht stays door-only. Fine print that actually matters: the door can still refuse you, cancel the ticket, and refund you on the spot. You bought a place in line. You did not buy a personality.

We spent twenty years pretending a queue was a religion. It was, a little. It also became a tourist attraction with a mythology thick enough to sell. Now they’re selling a little of it and keeping Saturday for the myth. I don’t know if that’s death or just the photocopy fading. The people who actually go already knew the door was the whole thing. The rest of us were collecting the story to tell in the kitchen.
