She Showed Up

Mary’s Underground threw a Lorde night, and then Lorde walked in and skipped the green room.

Sunday in Sydney, Mary’s Underground throws a Lorde night (What Was That, drag, drinks named after the era) and then she is actually there. Not a stunt the venue planned. The Kiwi walked in, skipped the green room, stood in the crush, and sang along to her own song like someone who still goes out. When they tried to extract her she came back, and that’s the clip. Every DJ in this province who has ever thrown a dedicated night for a singer they loved felt the floor tilt.

“What Was That” is the first dance-pop she’s given us since Melodrama, the MDMA record, the coloured light, the one we still put on when the kitchen is being honest. Washington Square got shut down by cops a month ago. Baby’s All Right is in the lyrics. Virgin lands June 27, with Jim-E Stack and Dan Nigro, a New York breakup from late 2023, the kind of detail that makes a certain listener cancel plans.

The underground doesn’t need her to be underground. It needs her to still want the room more than the photograph of the room, and last night she did. Play it on the drive home from a bar that isn’t Mary’s and isn’t Sydney. If you start singing before the second chorus and forget to be ironic, she showed up and so did you. The kids who throw the party were already there.
