Party Like the Lease Is Ending
Cobalt came back as punk, metal, hardcore, then a dance floor till two, with a hotel clock in the coverage and a fire that was only a blip.
Cobalt is open again, which in this city is never the same sentence as Cobalt is safe.
Georgia Straight, 12 August 2025: a new team (Isku of Verboden, plus Tony) reviving the room toward what it actually was. Punk, metal, hardcore, early shows, then a dance floor from ten to two. That is the honest Vancouver split if you have ever stayed past the last guitar: the kids who came for the bill, the kids who came for the kick, the same sticky floor learning a second language after 10 p.m.
The hotel clock was in the same piece. Teardown expected in four to six years. Expected: not scheduled on a notice you can photograph, not a demolition permit Night Shift has in hand. A reported expectation, the kind of sentence a scene learns to live inside. You party like the lease is ending because in this town the lease is always ending, and sometimes the coverage tells you so up front.
Do not turn that into a eulogy. A four-to-six-year window is not a last dance. It is a weather report. Vancouver has been tearing down rooms for hotels since before your oldest hoodie. The Cobalt coming back inside that window is the stubborn version of the story, not the sad one.
The other restoration matters more than the hotel rumor if you actually go. Queer nights and drag came back after a metal-only stretch that deleted the queer Instagram history. Read that again. A room can change its booking policy and then erase the proof that another public was ever there. Black Parade Link Up is the name that travelled with the restoration, not the deletion. Night Shift will not invent the missing posts. We will note the shape: a metal-only period, a vanished queer grid, a return. If you are queer and you dance in this city, you already know how often the second thing happens without the third.
Cobalt's whole gossip is that it can hold both without pretending they are the same night. Early: the bill that still thinks a guitar is a moral position. Late: the 10-to-2 that lets house and the harder kick have the floor after the merch table closes. That is not a compromise. That is a building doing two jobs because this city will not give you two buildings.
December 13 to 15, 2025, a temporary close after a small back-alley fire. Exclaim had it: small, back alley, three days. In a year when Vancouver was already walking into rooms with fire tickets in hand, a real fire (even a small one, even out back) is the kind of blip a clipboard remembers. The room reopened. The blip stays on the timeline. Do not inflate it into a disaster the coverage did not give you. Do not ignore it either. This is the same December Birdhouse got the raid energy and Vantek lost a licence. Context is not conspiracy. Context is why a three-day fire close in this city feels louder than a three-day fire close should.
Then Verboden did the regional thing the majors keep trying to productize. 2026, 28 to 31 May, multi-city: Portland at Coffin, Seattle at Central Saloon and Baba Yaga, Vancouver at Cobalt, Spokane at Big Dipper. verbodenfestival.com is the receipt. That is a Cascadia circuit with the names still attached to actual rooms, not a destination brand, a weekend that still fits in a van. Cobalt as the Vancouver node is the point of a revival that wants to be more than a nostalgia booking. You do not put a festival weekend in a room you think of as already dead. You put it in a room you are trying to keep loud.
Isku's fingerprints are on both sentences: the revival team and the festival that uses the room. Fine. Scenes have always been a couple of stubborn people and a calendar. Tony is the other name the Straight put on the desk. Night Shift does not have their quotes and will not invent any. The booking tells the story. Punk and metal and hardcore until the early evening is spent, then dance until two. If you are a house head who thinks Cobalt is not your building, you have not stayed late enough. If you are a hardcore kid who leaves when the kick comes in, you are allowed. The building is doing the rare thing: it is not making you pick a city.
Four to six years, said the coverage, for a hotel teardown. Say it like a rumor the paper already printed, not like a date on a permit. The fire was three days in December. The queer nights are back on the calendar after an erasure. Verboden already used the room as a regional anchor. That is the present tense.
The Straight gave you the expectation in August 2025. The festival gave you a May 2026 reason to cross a border. None of that is a closing date.
Party like the lease is ending. That is just Vancouver hygiene. The lease, as reported, is a handful of years and a maybe. The dance floor is 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., the early show is still a guitar, and the queer night had to be put back on purpose. The hotel can wait. The room cannot.
